I’m nuts.

I got the squirrel blouse finished! I keep trying to be in the pictures, but I’m the least photogenic person I know. So, I have to use my friend Jane, the dummy to model. Here’s the squirrelly blouse  and a detail shot  I found the tiny little trim when I went to Expo and had just enough for the collar and the yoke. I found the vintage buttons hunting through the jars on the shelves.  It fits perfectly, and makes me anxious for spring to really be here. I also finished this top  it has a drawstring around the neck, making a little ruffle and the 3/4 sleeves are gathered into a narrow band. I added a couple pieces of elastic just under the bust to give it a bit more shape. The fabric is the softest cotton lawn, not quite sheer.

I haven’t any idea why I’m so enamored with squirrels lately.  For my birthday a couple months ago, Mom gave me this cute little covered dish that I’ve coveted for a long time   Inside she put a pretty silver necklace for me. Needless to say I was thrilled. I think that my Aunt made that candy dish for my grandma a long time ago. It’s so cute, and of course I have it filled with peanut m&m’s.  And there’s this cookie jar that was in a shop window ( that’s now closed ) that I keep thinking about. I found this pic of the same one on ebay  Maybe I’ll seek out the owner and see if she still has it.  I don’t want to be a collector of squirrel things. I just like these couple pieces. I have plenty of ‘collected’ things already, and Ryan says my house is getting full of kitchy things. He’s right, I know ( but me having kitchy things is nothing new ). But who doesn’t like a couple of happy harmless critters?

I’ve decided it’s time to put up some of my divided bbq plates on the wall above the stove. But first, I think I’m going to paint. They need a colored wall as a backdrop. finding the right color is the new challenge.

critter update

So, after the previous post, there was a lot of activity with the squirrels. We finished putting the laundry room back together; Richard built a platform for the washer and dryer to set on to get the vent hose system where it should be in the wall. He re-did the whole vent in metal, so hopefully no critter will invade that way again. All this got finished up on Saturday morning. It was warm and we began working outside when we noticed one of the little ones exiting the house. They’re finally leaving!!!
We then got a call from Richard’s sister that she and her husband were in Long Beach and would be here inside half an hour. A day early! Everything was fine though, and the entertainment for the rest of the day was the frenzied squirrel activity. ( lots of fun to come see us, right? )After seeing the little one exit, we tacked down the wire mesh over the hole. Not thinking about it much, the doors were open downstairs and when we all went to leave to take a walk on the beach the little one was in my sewing room. We put Sunny in there and closed the door, while she ( and Richard ) chased it out from behind the boxes and stuff, then opened the sliding door and it made a mad dash away! That evening the mom ( as we learned the bigger one was ) kept trying to get back in and take the little one with. No luck. But it tried dozens of times. It packed the little one back and forth along the deck, and the two of them curled up in one of the trees just out of arms reach, as if to say: we need to get back in…Even through all my frustration, I couldn’t help but go “aawww” – it was so cute.
This morning we heard more noise inside the floor joists, and we opened the wire mesh door for them, and another two ( I think ) made an exit.  I bought a live trap yesterday but so far no one is interested in the peanut butter and corn chex that I baited it with. Whatever, I just hope hope hope thats the last of them; there’s been no sign of ‘mom’ so far today. Just maybe, I have a little better opinion of the ticker
Or maybe it was all a coincedence. hmmm………..

Yesterday we spent the whole day sightseeing and and our guests left this morning to head back to San Diego .
The weather has cooled off again and it is back to clouds and such.  Now we’ll resume our squirrel-free-house ( I hope ) lives.

I’m looking forward to having Mom, Gretchen & Tom this coming weekend for the 4th.

We are being beaten down by…………….squirrels. Yup, those “rats with good PR” are taking their toll on the both of us. And Sunny. They are in the floor joists, between the upstairs and downstairs, alongside all of the heating ductwork.  This week, Richard has torn apart the wall in the laundry room to replace the dryer vent that they chewed through when we blocked their access from the outside for two days. We since opened it back up for them to leave.
After searching online every which way I could think of, all I came up with regarding erradicating squirrels from your house was:
squirrels in the house are very destructive, and you need to make sure they don’t get in.  Yeah, thanks for that.  Nothing that tells you what to do to get them out!   My neighbor swears by one of those ‘tickers’ – an ultrasonic thing that plugs into the wall and sends a noise throughout the house via the wiring that makes small rodents and bugs want to vacate. I have my doubts, but out of desperation we bought one nonetheless.  (Also today a crew from the power company was here to do the final replacement of an outside wire – where we lost power a couple weeks back- that they said squirrels may have chewed through, and one of those guys swore by it too – so maybe it might just work ) I will say that within a half an hour after plugging that thing into the wall on Tuesday, the formerly mostly silent little creatures have become really animated and it sounds like they’re holding the olympics in there – and moving it from one spot to another.  The package, along with the two reccomenders, say it takes a couple of weeks until they are gone. I only hope they don’t take my sanity with them.
The main little guy runs along the deck, pausing to have a staredown with us on his way by- or maybe he’s just flipping us off. I guess we’ll get a trap, but I’m aftaid that since there’s only one that we’ve actually seen, it seems that if we trap him, the rest of them might die in the house. What to do??? And because I’m on the topic of critters: we also had a bear or something ransack our trash yesterday ( mostly a lot of insulation that the damn squirrels had made a mess of out of the laundry room wall), and I discovered a growing ( about 10″ ) wasps’ hive on the eve of Richard’s shop. great.

On a positive note, the weather here has finally warmed up to skirt wearing temperatures – in the low 70s. Is Summer really going to arrive after all? I am for it.

Aside from that, I am in the process of starting up an Etsy shop – I’ll be putting a bunch of stuff (beads,  jewelry, and handmade things ) that I have sitting here, as well as adding to it with some new things. If anyone has any experience and wants to offer input, I’m all ears.
